A Spiritual Approach To Binge Eating

Hey babe, are you a binge eater?

If I’m following my intuition accurately, I want to guess that you too currently struggle or have struggled at some point in your life with binge eating or overeating. Body image issues have come up for me over and over again throughout my life since I was 12 years old. I’ve gone through periods of bulimia, anorexia, and certainly orthorexia.

Overeating and binging is probably the most common issue that I struggle with, even up until this day. I don’t know if you follow Gabby Bernstein, but one of her online courses caught my eye over the weekend and I immediately  invested in it. Honestly, purchasing “Finally Full” was worth my $200 within ten minutes of the program. Mainly because I was finally able to pinpoint exactly what my issue was.

I have an addiction to dieting. I’ve tried every fucking diet that exists on the planet today. The Zone Diet, the Paleo Diet, Gluten Free Diet, Sugar Free Diet, Vegetarian, Vegan…you name it. I challenge you to name a diet that I haven’t yet tried. It’s that crazy.

In search of finding a “cure” to my overeating and binging problem, I would keep looking for the next diet. Every 6 weeks I would declare that I would stick to the diet “with no cheats” or “one cheat meal a week” and 6 days later I would end up eating myself into a coma. My relationship with food absolutely sucked. It was nonexistent. In fact, I think food asked for a divorce.

In Gabby’s program “Finally Full,” I learned two INCREDIBLE spiritual-based techniques that have already been incredibly life changing for me … and it’s only been about 5 days since I completed it.

The first technique is great for preventing overeating in the first place. It’s sitting down to eat your meal and saying, “I love my food and my food loves me.” It sounds simple, but by saying this mantra I’ve already slowed down my eating and became much more mindful of my fullness levels. I found that I have been getting full faster, and have been much more satisfied with my meals. Over eating naturally slowed down for me by setting the intention to love my food and have it love me back.

The second technique is a great one (that I tested too) for binging. Either you’re about to black out and enter your binge episode because you’ve been starving your body of nutrients with your “new diet,” or you’re mid binge after saying “fuck it” to your diet. You know you’ve had a case of the “fuck its” before when you accidentally ate something you shouldn’t have, that wasn’t a part of your diet plan, and thought to yourself that you might as well keep eating crap. We’ve all been there and I know you’re nodding your head right now!

When you’re in your mid binge episode or just about deciding to get started, Gabby talks about the 1-minute breathing exercise. Basically stop whatever you’re doing and take a deep breath in for 5 seconds, holding it for 5 seconds, and then releasing it for 5 seconds. Doing this 4 times is enough to take you out of your binge. It brings your mind back to a place of peacefulness. It makes you rethink what you’re doing. Trust me it works. I’ve tried it! It’s actually pretty incredible. I’ve even vowed to do this exercise before eating too to make sure I’m super present with my food alongside the mantra.

I feel a massive shift already happening with my relationship with food, and the freedom that I already feel has been incredible. I believe that there is a spiritual solution to overeating and binging, and I’m so excited to share this practice with you.

I hope these two techniques make as big of an impact on you and your relationship with food as it has on me. Let me know how it goes once you try them!
